APOLO’s main objective is to provide a quantum leap in the development of advanced power conversion technologies based on the smart combination of an innovative onboard ammonia cracking technology based on a Catalytic Membrane Reactor (CMR) coupled with either 1) an advanced Fuel cell running on pure hydrogen or, 2) a novel ammonia engine running on an ammonia/hydrogen blend targeting in
all cases the full decarbonisation of the maritime sector at the TRL5 scale (125 kW output power).
These goals will be reached by:
▪ Designing and setting up a broad and complete network of value chains with world-class universities, research centers and industrial partners to develop the key building blocks for power conversion
▪ Developing a set of flexible, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies that can be easily tailored for the use of ammonia in the maritime sector.
▪ Laying the foundations for new business opportunities related to the development of advanced power conversion systems enabling a substantial process intensification in the maritime sector.
Moreover, APOLO will put extra emphasis on safety and acceptability of ammonia as a fuel in the maritime sector.
For this purpose, APOLO has a dedicated task for safety and regulatory compliance and definition.
The project outcomes will be boosted by international companies such as JM (joining in the consortium as an associated partner from UK ), NUVERA, CORVUS, FER, FERSA, ASTANDER and H2SITE.
To achieve this overall objective, APOLO is divided in the following specific targets:
- To develop and compare at TRL5 two power conversion solutions for maritime decarbonization;
- To develop a full LCA, LCC, sLCA and Health and Safety Analysis (HSE) of APOLO;
- To pave the way for future exploitation of APOLO Key Exploitable results;
- To promote the dissemination and communication of APOLO’s results and expand its impact
